We are currently spending a lot of time at home with our families. Those of us with younger kids are trying to find fun activities to entertain them, like homemade chalk. I’m especially seeking kid friendly activities that don’t include electronics to fill part of the day at least! We made Playdough, galaxy bubbles, and DIY chalk. This has been quite a year hasn’t it? As a parent I’m doing my very best to stay occupied with my kids with things like DIY chalk. It’s important to me they don’t worry about anything and just have fun. My goal is that in the future when we look back at this time as the kids just remember that time we stayed home and had a lot of fun.
Corn starch is amazing for arts and crafts like homemade chalk. You can also use it to make Playdough, slime, and more. Of course my toddler made a mess with it but that’s okay because I only got it to have fun with. It’s one of the things you can easily order from Amazon right now because food products are an essential item.
Another item I got off Amazon to use to make DIY chalk was food coloring. The corn starch and food coloring came in the mail really fast, I was surprised. It made this art project “how to make chalk at home” a lot easier because I didn’t have to go to the store.
How to make chalk at home only needs 3 simple ingredients. All you need for DIY chalk is 1 cup cornstarch, 1 cup water and food coloring. This art projects so simple to make as well.
Howeverthe homemade chalk does need about 4 hours in the freezer. But the instructions are super simple. In a large mixing bowl combine the water and the cornstarch. Then whisk these two ingredients together vigorously until thoroughly combined.
Next, add a few drops of your favorite color and whisk again. Pour the liquid into your favorite mold shape and set in the freezer for 4 hours minimum. Use separate bowls for separate colors. 1 cup water plus 1 cup cornstarch will fill about 1 molds worth of chalk.
I happened to have some star shaped molds, tree shaped molds, and 1 extra ice tray. So that’s what I used as a chalk mold. The ice tray was surprisingly easy to make DIY chalk in. Furthermore the ice cube shape made a great shape for my toddler to use.
Time needed: 4 hours and 12 minutes.
